Tips for Raising a Middle Schooler

I recently read an article on 30 Tips for Raising Middle Schoolers. I narrowed it down to the top 10 I thought were most important and revamped a few. The link to the full article is below.

1. Insist on respect and show respect. Remember they are always watching even when you think they are not. At this age children can be mouthy and naturally rude, but continue to be consistent with respect. Respect is a basic life skill that they will use the rest of their lives.

2. Communicate about friends. Talk to your child about her friendships openly. Reminding your child that having quality friends is more important than quantity.

3. Speak early. Start conversations about important topics before it's too late.

4. Pay attention. Address behaviors/concerns if they may come up. Ask questions, and let them know you care.

5. Encourage health. Encourage healthy eating, sleeping, and exercise. This is a crucial time in their lives, their bodies are constantly changing and need fuel to function at their best.

6. Create a quiet zone. Establish a quiet workplace without noise or distractions so they can complete homework or just take a quiet break.

7. Social media boundaries. Establish social media boundaries, maintain tech-free bedrooms, keep laptops and tablets in common areas.

8. Unplug. Remind them to unplug from the day or the week. Schedule a time to do something fun with the family each weekend.

9. Have those awkward convos. You need to have the conversation about sex, drugs, and alcohol. Yes I know it's a dreaded topic, but it needs to happen. Don't leave school or friends to fill them in. Let them know your expectations and educate them.

10. Be in the know. Know what goes on at their friends' houses. Make sure parents are present.

And lastly ALWAYS make sure they know they are loved and cared for. :)
