The Costs of Vaping/Teen Tobacco Use

Vaping resumes to be a popular topic as it continues to cause ongoing issues for adolescents. Between marketing strategies targeting youth, to constant vaping issues in schools, it’s become an epidemic. The states are feeling it, specifically MN. According to Clearway, each Minnesotan ends up spending $593/year due to smoking-related illnesses. (Even if you don’t smoke) Blue Cross Blue Shield of MN states, “Smoking claims more than 6,000 lives, costing MN over $3 billion annually.” These numbers will continue to rise as we see teen tobacco use increase. Big Tobacco will continue to market to youth to keep their profits. About 95% of all smokers started by the time they were 21. Once Big Tobacco gets an adolescent hooked, they have years of their money to profit from. Since vaping/tobacco use continues to be an issue some cities in MN have passed laws raising the legal age to buy tobacco and products to 21. This is just one intervention our state has implemented to try to combat youth tobacco use. Visit missingitmn.org for more information.
