Marijuana - What you need to know to talk to your teen

It's important for parents to communicate with their teens about marijuana more than ever today. As it has become legal in some states and medical marijuana has become more prevalent there are many mixed messages our youth are receiving.

To start, you may touch on some basics about marijuana such as what it looks like, what are different terms people use for marijuana, and how is it used. If you don't know yourself please refer to the link I will be posting below. It's important you're communicating honest and truthful facts.

Next is the most important part, addressing potential long term effects of marijuana use. Many youth and even adults have skewed views on if marijuana is harmful or not. Again, please refer to the resource if you don't know the facts.

You can then go on to talk about why people may use marijuana and what are the warning signs that someone may be using. A helpful discussion at this time can also be what to do if your teen has a friend who is using marijuana.

Lastly, communicate with your youth about your expectations as a parent about marijuana use. Let your teen know you are open for any questions. End your discussion with a reminder to your youth how much you care about them and their future. Continue to show your love and support through honest and open discussions.
