Reasons Why Teenagers Experiement With Drugs

There are many reasons why teenagers may dabble in substances, but to understand teenager choices and behaviors you need to remember what it's like to be a teen. Take a few seconds to reflect back on your adolescent years. It wasn't so simple was it?

Here are some reasons why teens experiment with substances according to drugabuse.com.

Boredom - One of the most common reasons why teens begin to experiment is they are simply bored. Keeping them involved in school, sports, clubs, and outside activities is important to cure boredom and decreases the risk of the mind wondering to poor choices.

A Bonding Experience - Many kids usually struggle with identity issues and finding a peer group they fit into can be difficult. Drugs and alcohol can fill that void.

Depression - When teens are sad/depressed substances can be a way to forget and feel better. It's an attempt to self-medicate.

Curiosity - This is a natural part of life and teenagers brains are in the developmental process, meaning their rational part of their brain is still developing. They often act on impulse and don't think out consequences. Educate your teen on consequences of drug use so just maybe they will think twice before engaging in risky behaviors, including substance use.

Stress - Middle school and high school can be very high stress environments. With a lack of coping skills, teens will often turn to substances for that instant gratification and a relief of life stressors.

Low Self-Esteem - Media, pressure from family/friends, or the lack of friends can lead to self-destructive behavior. It's easy for teens to compare themselves to an air-brushed model or a athlete on steroids and think it's a realistic image. Substance use seems like an easy way to escape these social pressures.

Peer Pressure - Every teen experiences some kind of peer pressure, whether it's on the bus, after the basketball game, or in the locker room. It's important your teen knows they can contact you or another trusted adult for an outlet incase they get stuck in a sticky situation.

Bottom line, teenage years are chaos. Trying your best to hear your teen out can be enlightening.
