How can I help my child?

It's often hard for parents to discuss drugs and alcohol with their adolescents, but it's a MUST. I have worked with many families throughout my experience and too often there was never clear expectations or conversations about using before it actually place.

So how do you start that conversation with your teen?

1. Let them know you are available and open to talk about such topics, even if it's a bit uncomfortable for both parties.

2. Remind them that you once were in their shoes and you are aware of some of the hard decisions they will be faced with.

3. Use commercials, ads in magazines, scenes in movies, music lyrics to spark up conversation.

4. Discuss your thoughts in regards to drug and alcohol use. Make sure they understand your expectations if such would occur.

5. EDUCATE them to the best of your ability. If you don't have answers or them use other resources found on reliable websites or contact your awesome school chemical health counselor! :)

6. Let them know you care, then let the conversation be. If you are too pushy teens may rebel. Revisit the conversation as you feel is necessary.

7. Ultimately remember the power is in their hands, they will make the decision they think is best. Sometimes you may not agree, but then use it as a learning experience.
